Gifted Endorsement

Overview:

3 courses each lasting approximately 9 weeks

Course 1: Characteristics of the Gifted Learner

“Characteristics of the Gifted Learner” is an introductory course to the unique characteristics,

development, and needs of the gifted learner. This course meets the Gifted In-Field Education

Endorsement Standards developed by the Georgia Professional Standards

Commission (GaPSC). These content standards are designed to prepare individuals to teach

gifted and talented students and are aligned with the InTASC, TAPS, the National Association for Gifted Children, and the Council for Exceptional Children Standards.

Course 2: Methods & Curriculum

This course will involve an in-depth look at the different models of gifted education as well as

differentiated lesson planning, curriculum, and strategies that can be used for teaching the

gifted child.

Course 3: Identification and Assessment of the Gifted Learner

Course participants will examine assessment tools (national and state-approved) to determine the uses and limitations for identifying gifted students; including those from diverse backgrounds. Instructional practices will be developed and implemented in the classroom environment in order for the participants to complete the case study on an individual student thus the testing process is explored to its fullest. Course content will include learning style inventories, flexible grouping, anchor activities, etc. in order to give the participants the needed information on their students in regard to assessment procedures. In addition to addressing the Georgia Program Gifted Standards (Rule 505-3-.90), topics will focus on InTASC and TAPS Standards. The coursework is equivalent to a graduate-level college course.

Reading Endorsement

Overview:

3 courses lasting approximately 9 weeks each

  • Satisfies HB 538 literacy requirement

  • Fully online (except for pre & post meetings)

  • The first course will begin after Labor Day (date TBA)

  • Cost $1375 (includes textbooks)

  • Applications due August 1, 2024

Course 1: Foundations of Teaching Reading in a Diverse Society

This course is designed to provide and extend candidates' knowledge of the reading process by examining theory and research as a foundation for making instructional decisions for planning and implementing effective literacy programs. In order to inform such decision-making, candidates will explore current issues, materials, strategies, and approaches to teaching reading to P-12 children in our diverse society.

Course 2: Teaching Reading & Writing in the Content Areas

This course is designed to provide candidates with a conceptual and instructional framework

based for teaching reading and writing in the content areas. Realizing that much of what is read involves informational texts (e.g., books, magazines, newspapers, instructions, directions, textbooks, guides, and other content sources), this course will provide candidates with research-based strategies to help readers comprehend such text structures. Essential to this course is the interrelationship between reading and writing in all grades P-12.

Course 3: Reading Assessment, Diagnosis, Evaluation, & Intervention for Diverse Learners

This course is designed to provide candidates with knowledge of theoretical models, methods, and materials for literacy assessment. Such knowledge will provide candidates with the framework needed to administer assessments and use the information from formal and informal measures to develop appropriate literacy instruction that meets the needs of diverse learners in P – 12 classrooms. Critical to this course is the candidate’s need to reflect on personal beliefs about reading assessment and the relationship to his/her own teaching and learning. This course requires a 30-hour practicum experience.

Dyslexia Endorsement

Overview:

2 Courses - Course 1 is approximately 16 weeks & Course 2 is approximately 12 weeks

  • Fully online with biweekly synchronous online sessions (except for F2F pre & post meetings)

  • Satisfies HB 538 literacy requirement

  • The first course will begin after Labor Day (dates TBA)

  • Cost $1200

  • Must purchase text - approximately $15 - Overcoming Dyslexia: 2nd Edition

  • Applications due August 1, 2024

Course 1 - Foundations of Literacy Acquisition

Foundations of Literacy Acquisition is designed to enable candidates to understand the five language processing requirements of proficient reading and writing: phonological orthographic, semantic, syntactic, and discourse. Additionally, the candidate will increase their understanding of the reciprocal relationships among phonemic awareness, decoding, word recognition, spelling, and vocabulary knowledge. Candidates will also explore the characteristics of a student with dyslexia. This course includes a 10-hour field experience.

Course 2 - Assessments and Structured Literacy

Assessments and Structured Literacy Instruction is designed to enable the candidate to practice, apply, and implement assessments; to include screening, progress monitoring, diagnostics, and outcome assessments. The course will focus on knowing and utilizing structured literacy practices which include explicit, systematic, cumulative, and teacher-directed principles and practices. During the Assessment and Structured Literacy Instruction course, the candidate will provide rationales and adaptations in instruction to accommodate for individual differences in cognitive, linguistic, sociocultural, and behavioral aspects of learning to include multimodal and multisensory language learning techniques. The course will require a case study where the candidate will practice, apply, and implement assessments and instruction to address the five language processing requirements previously covered in course one. This course includes a 20-hour practicum/case study.
